Why is my wine cooler not holding temperature?
Short answer
On wine storage the tolerance worth living with is a degree or two, and in most of these cellars the bottles cost more than the unit holding them.
Why that is usually the answer
On a dual-zone unit, one zone holding while the other climbs is actually good news: the working zone proves the sealed system, so the fault belongs to the other zone's own evaporator, fan or damper. A display reading correctly while the bottles feel warm is not lying either. Its sensor is reporting from a spot the cold air still reaches, which is why we take the reading at bottle level in the middle of a full rack instead of trusting the panel.
Where it usually turns out to be
Condensation on the inside of the glass is a separate fault and gets confused with a temperature fault constantly. It is the door: either the seal has taken a set, or the heater in the glazing that is supposed to hold the pane above dew point has failed. In houses near the water at Monarch Beach, Dana Point and San Clemente this shows up far more readily than it does inland, because the dew point in the room is higher for much of the year and the margin that pane heater is working with is correspondingly smaller.
Undercounter wine cabinets fail differently from full-height columns, and most of what goes wrong with them is the cabinetry rather than the machine. They are built into islands and butler's pantries with a solid back and almost no clearance, they reject heat forward through a grille that is easy to block with a toe kick or a rug, and they sit in the warmest part of the kitchen. A cabinet that has crept up three degrees over a summer in Talega or Coto de Caza very often needs the condenser cleaned and the airflow path opened, and finding that is a better outcome for everyone than selling you a control board.
