Southern California water is mineral heavy, and the cartridge is the only thing standing between that and the small brass and plastic parts downstream of it. Left in past its interval, the deposits carry through to the inlet valve screen and into the fill tube, and a fill tube that has started to scale also starts to freeze, because water now sits in it a little longer on every fill. That is the point where a filter problem stops being a filter problem. The mold underfills, the machine harvests on schedule anyway, and you get the short hollow cubes that get a perfectly good ice maker condemned and replaced. Changing the cartridge on a sensible interval costs a great deal less than the module does.
