Common fault

Why is my Sub-Zero refrigerator not cooling?

Short answer

Open the freezer before you do anything else.

Why that is usually the answer

On a Sub-Zero the freezer and the refrigerator are cooled by their own separate sealed systems, so a freezer that is still hard frozen has already proved the compressor and the refrigerant side are healthy, and the fault has to sit on the refrigerator circuit. From there the list is short: the evaporator fan for that compartment has stopped turning, the defrost has failed and the coil is packed in ice, or the thermistor reporting that compartment has drifted far enough that the control has stopped calling for cooling. All three are parts we carry, and in most South Orange County kitchens this is a one-visit repair.

Where it usually turns out to be

The order of checks matters. We take the interior panel off and look at the evaporator first, because ice on the coil and a dead fan produce an identical symptom from outside the cabinet and need completely different parts. Then the defrost heater and the thermistor go on the meter, and the fan is watched through a full cycle rather than judged on a single listen at the grille. Only after all of that do we go near the sealed system, and on a unit whose freezer is still working we very rarely have to.

Where the house sits changes what we expect to find. Along the coast at Dana Point, Capistrano Beach and San Clemente the condenser is usually the aggravating factor: salt has closed the fins, the whole cabinet runs warmer than designed, and the refrigerator side, which has the smaller margin, gives up first while the freezer carries on. Inland in Talega, Ladera Ranch and Coto de Caza the same complaint is more often a genuine failure of the fridge evaporator fan, because those units run more hours through a hot summer and the fan motor is the part counting them.

If that matches what yours is doing, say so when you call — it decides which parts come on the van.

Professional, courteous, and knowledgeable. The technician diagnosed the wine cooler’s humidity problem clearly and offered a fair price. Highly recommended for San Clemente residents.

The fridge side kept drifting warm every afternoon and came back fine by morning, so I had half convinced myself I was imagining it. He came out the same day, pulled the lower grille and showed me the fins crusted white with salt off the harbor. Cleaned, and it has held since.

Questions

Answers before you call

Can you work on a built-in without pulling it out of the cabinetry?

Nearly always. The condenser is reached through the lower grille, and the evaporator and its fan sit behind an interior panel. With stone counters, custom panel fronts and tight island runs, dragging a column forward risks the surround and the flooring more than the fault does. A unit comes out only when the fault leaves no other way, and you are told first.

Are you available at night and on weekends?

The phone is answered 24/7, holidays included. Refrigeration is not polite about timing, and a Friday evening, freezer and wine cabinet just loaded for the weekend, is when we hear from people most. If a late call is better handled by keeping the doors shut until first thing, you will be told that rather than sent a technician at midnight.
